Ultimate Running Playlist for Those Who Need Distraction

Posted by in Listen to This (Music)

It didn’t take me long, when I first started running, to realize that the struggle for me was less of a physical one than a mental one. Yes, moving my body was hard, but keeping my brain happy was harder. The entire time I was working out was a fight between boredom, wanting to give up, and staying on the GD treadmill.

I just can’t stay out of my own head.

Apparently this is fairly common, there are two types of runners – those who like silence, who use the time to focus on technique, to breathe, to feel their bodies move, who clear all the distractions, and people like me who need every distraction in the world to keep them from remembering they are running.

Some helpful friends suggested watching a show that I like while I worked out, and only while I worked out, so that I would be motivated by my desire to watch my show. So I tried. It was terrible. I couldn’t focus enough on my show to drown out my thoughts of how much I didn’t want to be running, or pay enough attention to know what was happening in the story. I tried listening to my favourite songs, and while that might work for some, for me it just wasn’t the answer. I usually listen to folk/singer-songwriter music, and it’s just too mellow to really pound it out to.

I took to pinterest, and running message boards and eventually found the answer – hip/hop, rap, metal, pop, all music that I don’t listen to in my regular life, but which were exactly what I needed after I strap on my running shoes. The pounding beats let me zone out, and forget where I am. I find myself running faster and faster to match the rhythm.

Now, this is embarrassing because some of these songs have words that make me blush, and almost all of them I will never let my kids listen to. But they do the trick. Here is my ultimate running playlist:

  1. Paralyzer – Finger Eleven
  2. Pony – Ginuwine
  3. Pretty Fly (For a White Guy) – The Offspring
  4. Talking Body – Tove Lo
  5. Work, Bitch – Britney Spears
  6. Timber (feat. Ke$ha) – Pitbull
  7. I Know You Want Me – Pitbull
  8. Suga Suga – Baby Bash
  9. Pop That – French Montana
  10. Honey, I’m Good – Andy Grammer
  11. Want to Want Me – Jason Derulo
